well thanks for the warning but again where I live is not affiliated with the school in any way. asking for another copy is a good idea and I havent thought about that but seeing as I already ordered a blank what the hell. Im not going to be messing around with the tumblers or anything even in the door itself. I'm an engineering student so shit like this is fun to me anyways.

if i ordered the correct blank it should fully go into the door but not turn right?

based on this I'm pretty confident its the J keyway so went ahead and ordered 2 blanks. Hopefully I can either make them myself with a file and some time or find a nice locksmith. anyone care to tell me how hard it would be to make the key myself by hand? don't best locks have tolerance of 5/100ths of an inch or something ridiculous like that?

no no you have it all wrong. Me and my roomate live in a dorm that we pay for (ie we have every right to be here). However we have a buddy who lives off campus who would like to crash at our place between classes instead of going home. Since we are not always there it would be convenient if he could have a key as well. so yes it may be illegal in a sense but we are not breaking into somewhere we shouldn't be or anything like that.

Well, so now you have a new story.

If an RA sees someone that doesn't live in the room keying in, then that buddy is subject to criminal trespass by the university police.

Can we lock this thread already?

neoskunk wrote:well in all honesty we havent lost a key we just need another for a buddy of ours. so just paying doesn't solve our problem and we wouldn't have to return the copy so thats not a problem either. also we live off campus meaning no affiliation with the school so therefore no hold on registration either :). but looks like I am out of luck then. Some people on other forums have suggested taping the key to cover the DND stamp and write like office or something on the tape. but I am more concerned with whether or not a locksmith or hardware store would even be able to make a copy of this key even if it didn't have the DND stamp on it.

You idiot. There is no school I'm aware of that rents out dorms to non-students, with an exception of short term conferences. By the way, many campus police officers are sworn officers. If you're found in a residence hall as a non-resident, let alone non student, unescorted with no legitimate business, you're going to get a criminal trespass charge.

And for those of you who live in the dorms... uh... don't even leave your door unlocked for even a minute. Gotta look out for some people who have no business being in the building obtaining building access keys.

wow ok flame me when you don't even know what you are talking about. I live in a privately owned "dorm" that rents to any "student." There are several schools in the city in which i live therefore the "dorm" in which i reside has no affiliation to any particular school.

and i fail to see how my friend would get near a trespassing charge. the building is not restricted in any way and there are no RA's. plus we are allowed to have any guests we want be it student or not.

I understand you think I'm probably up to no good but flaming isnt necessary just don't respond.

Actually, your story has changed enough you really should realize flaming would happen. No matter which story you have said is the truth, (if any) we will not help you. You don't legally own rights to the lock, and you really should not be messing around with trying to build a key. I have personally ripped pins out of a SFIC lock before with a hand made key. (and it was a perfect visual match to my key)

I am going to lock this thread.

Please do not make a new posting anywhere asking about Sargent keyway bitings, or anything else related to this style lock. If you require further information on this decision, please PM me.
