Noob Question: Pick too big?

Postby cabot696 » 7 Dec 2009 20:40

I recently started to try myself at some lock picking. I'm using a standard Southord pick set and can successfully pick a 2-pin lock. But for the past few hours, I have tried to pick a normal 4-pin Master Lock (45 mm). I just can't. The hook pick almost seems too big. I can't slide it in the lock (while the tension wrench is in) without accidentally pressing down on the pins. It feels as though I have no room to move around to feel each pin. For example, I can easily pull the pick out, yet it requires a lot of turning and shaking to push the pick in the lock. Is this normal? I'm a total newbie so I wouldn't know.

Thanks for any help :D

Can you tell us exactly what model Master Lock it is and what condition it is in?
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

I bought this lock new a few days ago, but I don't know the exact model.
I think I'm just inexperienced, and it's not a matter of the lock or pick. I just want to make sure.

If this helps at all:

have you tried using a smaller tensor or top tension... a tensor can be made from most any strip of metal yo can find...

they make smaller pick just for pad locks with small openings like this.. very small pic that will let you pick the lock.
but remember" small pick core are harder in my book to pick because of the clearance . need more info please fell free to ask me
David..

Also try a Small Diamond Pick and see what happens
maybe that helps.

It looks like this guy manages to pick a very similar lock with the same pick. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL4YcyNLEMM

The half-diamond pick works a bit better.

I guess I just need to practice. Thanks for the help.
