What Picks Should I Buy?

Postby narwhalman » 7 Jan 2010 12:00

Hey, Im new to lockpicking. I have a small set of picks consisting of a small hook, snake, standard tension wrench, diamond, and a single ball. I was wondering what picks I should get if I am missing any crucial picks.

I think you got everything you need. I have maybe 20 to 25 different picks in my kit but only use maybe just two types of hook picks but I rely on about 5 different tension wrenches for various locks.

A lot of literature on lockpicking has an endless list of the types of picks out there but you only need a hook and your favorite diamond or rake pick for 90% of what you'll practice on.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Welcome to the sport.

Since you said you are new I suggest not adding any tools now. Just practice and enjoy the challenge of the sport.

Maybe as you gain experience and try more difficult locks, you can think about buying a few more tools; maybe
two or three different tension wrenches and one or two different styles of hook tools, ie, shallow and deep.

remember the credo: Never pick a lock you don't have permission to open.

I have a ton of HPC picks, and wrenches that I use/have as my toolbox so to speak. But for most applications and general use, I have an old Peterson set (was a city set at one time) that I turn to. It is all I need for 90-95% of locks that I encounter. Past that, it comes down to certain wrenches or deforest picks.

The set is
Short hook
Gem hook
Small hook I made out of their s rake
L rake
C rake
and three of my favorite style wrenches.
