Price Guide for Locks?

Postby FreemasonAFAM » 13 Jan 2010 22:31

Would someone please let me know of any existing price guide for new/antique/used locks?

I figure someone must collect locks: ergo there has to be a book/site/guide anything (!) My Google must be broken because I can't find anything. Don't really want to spend a day mining eBay auction data.

I am limited because I simply don't know that much about the various brand names and the sites I can find are dedicated to one brand at a time. Anyone know if there is a site that sells multiple brands?

Perhaps there is a place here for such a forum - not to sell/buy, that's already covered, but to discuss current prices? I'm new here so apologies in advance if such a page already exists and I have missed it.

Your thoughts?

It varies so much, and its such a small market, there is no common books, etc.

The closest I've found for a GOOD authority on antique locks (besides here) is... go figure... http://www.antique-locks.com

The last book to come out was in the 1970's and that was for old 1800-1970 padlocks which usually included a lot of lever locks, pancake locks, railroad switch locks, etc.

It sure would be nice if there was something out right now to cover the last 40 years of locks. Perhaps I should write one.

There is so much out there that to compile one high and mighty guide would cost an arm and a leg.

It also depends on the part of the world, the application, the local laws etc.

There were many companies producing locks, at one time, but many got swallowed up by larger companies, effectively cancelling the name.

Corbin-Russwin comes to mind. Corbin swallowed Russwin a long long time ago and Russwin rim mortise locks are no longer made. They were a widely found product across North America. They are beautiful locks. I saw one recently (that I may have to restore) installed with a modified Medeco rim cylinder.

There was a book called "The Encyclopedia of Locks and Locksmithing" that is a pretty good guide in general but quite out of date.

Another publisher to look for that might help are Lounging Lizard publications. They specialize in manuals for the locksmith trade. Also you can purchase the entire collection of Locksmith Ledger Magazine or TNL on DVD. You can then see the types of locks written about in the last 100 years.

Thanks for the link again unlisted! I forgot to bookmark it before my thread about antique registers got moved to advanced. I'm a dummy sometimes...
