Drilling Locks... Please help

Postby blackstone REO » 21 Jan 2010 22:49

I am in the real estate business.. we specialize in foreclosures and the property preservation side. We get alot of properties in Florida, when no utilities are on and we go out and knock and look in the windows and they are vacant, we need to re-key and put on a lockbox.

Typically when we re key them we just drill out where the screws should be on the outside and the deadbolt falls out, the knob locks we drill through the pins first and try a screwdriver, sometimes this works sometines it don't and we drill larger and larger holes in the keyhole and most of the time we can get a screwdriver in.

So my question is what is the best way to drill out these locks that are a higher grade, schlage, medco.. etc. The kwik set, defiant. etc. I have no trouble with, and I really don't have the time to learn how to pick a lock ( do the electronic picks and the pick guns with tensioner work??? I was thinking of buying one) unless the general opion of this forum is that I should learn how to actually get the pick set and learn it.. it as opposed to drilling every time..

Also if there are any locksmiths who can rekey vacant / foreclosed / REO homes in Florida let me know we cover south east, orlando, tampa, fort meyers, naples, and more soon! we can get you some work if you are reasonable.. we have alot of quanity but dont get paid alot for each lock.. the bank doesn't care what it took to get in but they will pay us a little for eack knob and deadblot, so if there are 4 access doors and 2 locksets per door it pays decent..

Thank you

Destructive entry is considered an Advanced topic and restricted to a special forum.

That being said, you'll find that a lot of higher end locks (Medeco, Yale, etc) have hardened ball bearings and steel plates to increase the amount of time it takes to drill. I'd recommend getting a professional locksmith on the payroll if you have a lot of them to do.

Go with a pick gun. its a shame to lose every lock. the gun should be under $40 if you look around and pritty easy to learn pick up a thin and a thick tention tool I like the thicker one the bendy ones I use for regular picking. you should be able to open regular locks the first day I would bet not any highsecurity right away good luck. or try this go buy a garage door rod itslike 8 feet long and you unlock the chain drive by pulling the emergancy rope from out side and you just open the garage door if its a auto garage door. look in to that more to I am not good with details ttyl.
