Importing to Australia

Postby Phoebus » 13 Mar 2009 9:48

Hey, I've been learning to pick locks for a couple of weeks now and I've finally decided to get serious and buy a set(not that I wasn't serious before :D ). I'm a little hesitant though as I have read some stories about customs here in Australia seizing packages.

The set I'm looking at getting is http://www.southord.com/Lock-Picking-Tools/Lock-Pick-Set-Slim-Line-Fifteen-Piece-1510.html and I just wanted to know if there are any aussies here who have ordered from southord before and know that I won't be spending 70 odd bucks to buy customs a shiny set of new picks lol.

P.S. I live in brisbane in case there are any added laws in QLD

P.P.S. Apologies if this has been covered in another thread, I only took a quick glance.

I am from Brisbane and have ordered several picks from a few other sites and had no problems at all. I can't 100% guarantee that it won't be taken by customs but you have a pretty decent chance of it getting through.

I emailed Australian customs re importing lock picks and pick guns and this is the reply

Thank you for your email.

There are no Australian Customs and Border Protection restrictions on these items.

However please contact your State Police to see if there are any State restrictions. I have attached a list of Police contacts for you.

so as far as i can see there shou;dnt be any dramas buying lock picks or pick guns from overseas and getting them into Australia as customs shouldnt seize them as there are no restrictions.

Hi, I have the same question too and wonder how did your purchase go?

Did you receive it successfully? Thanks

I order from at least China and Germany on a regular basis and I've yet to experience any lockpick tools being taken by customs. I actually have more of an issue with UPS than customs cos they keep on delivering my packages to the wrong address.

I used to live in Mackay N Qld and in every different port you are the mercy of the local customs inspector. If he/she thinks that the package may be questionable and they block it, so be it. ACS will put out the line according to their books and policies but the human factor cannot be relied upon.

In Mackay I was able to get that stuff in, but in Townsville I couldnt. Cairns, I could and Melbourne and Perth I could but Sydney I couldnt.

It varies a lot.

Just just feedback on my importing to Australia,

I live in South Australia and just recieved my 14 piece Southford lock pick set from Lockpicks.com. I used standard delivery and it took about a week and a half.

Excellent, that's good to hear.
May I ask how the packaged was labelled? Specifically, the customs declaration sticker.

@NanoDuke - I just received tools ordered direct from SouthOrd to my residence in Adelaide. They were sent through the USPS and the Customs Declaration sticker lists the items as **Contents: Other** and **Detailed Description: Tools**. Fast delivery too, inside 2 weeks :)

I have ordered from both China and Southord no problems with either of them, i am in Qld. The law here states u must not be in possession in a public place without lawful excuse and the onus of proof is on the person in possession. But in your own home shouldn't be a problem.

Was doing a job for Customs the other day and the guy started talking to me about lockpicks, so I told him how it isn't illegal for them to import them to Australia unless they are going to be used with illegal intent. He said that he only thought that they were because this is what he had been told so I asked if he had read it anywhere which he hasn't, also the only way that he knew what they were is because one of the guys he worked with used to be a Locksmith and showed the guys his picks, so even though its not illegal to own or import them not all Customs people know this.
