Good web sites on historical lock and key information

Postby greyman » 17 Mar 2010 5:42

I'm starting this thread as an unashamed plug. The web site, by Brian Morland, is under construction but already contains interesting material on UK locks and safes. The site is at: http://www.historyoflocks.com/

I am supporting this project because I know this person and agree with his philosophy of sharing information about locks and keys of historical importance. Without sites like this, some of this information may disappear. Besides, it helps to educate the public

Another great site is Prescott's antique-locks: http://www.antique-locks.com

Over to LP101 members to list their favourite historical lock & key web sites. Please restrict discussion to HISTORICAL sites.

Cheers

Greyman,

I don't know of any historical type of key and lock websites. I wish I did know of some as this is something that I am interested in, especially non US locks and keys.

Thanks for the links, those are some interesting sites indeed. When you get a chance Greyman, drop me a pm as I want to discuss whether you know someone or not. If not, I'll give you his contact info as he has some good info and lock history for certain types of locks.

Again, thanks for the cool links,

Zeke79
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Thanks for that - I'd forgotten about it. That is a UK lock collector's site (not mentioning any names  ). Wish I had those locks!

I almost forgot to mention Oli Diederichsen's blog at http://blog.tresoroeffnung.de/
which has pictures of some fantastic antique German locks.

Another excellent site for German (and some other countries') locks is: http://www.geldschrankspezialist.de/home.php?lang=en

And yet another link, it's great seeing how locks have evolved over the years.
