It depends a bit on your level of expectation. Is it better than messing around with a paperclip? Absolutely. Is it the only set you'll ever purchase if you really get into the hobby? No. Is it good to get you started? Sure!

You will find that almost any commercial, mass-produced set could benefit from some light sanding to polish off the edges and make them smoother to manipulate in the lock.

You're asking if anyone has lockpicking tips on a lockpicking website? :) The lockpicking forum is a good place to start reading. There are a bunch of good posts featured at the top of the thread list there, including:

tacomn wrote:do i need to buy a cutaway.

No. Some people find them helpful when they're starting out, to help them visualize what's happening in the lock -- and, from that standpoint, they can be useful for the first couple of weeks while you're starting out. After that, I think that most people would agree that they're a great way to develop bad habits. (Having said that, I do own several cut-aways: some were bought to help me get into picking a particular style of lock, and others because I find the particular locking mechanism intriguing, and it's facinating to see it at work.)

You haven't filled out your location in your user profile, or told us what state (or even what country) you live in, so it's hard to answer that. The legal thread may provide you with some answers -- but it's a bit late if they're already in the mail.

I no it doesnt have many picks but i got i because alot people seem to think its professional level. Mabey not the best but better than most. Do you believe this to be wrong? Also I have been lockpicking for quite some time and i am good at raking but i cant single pick. I read books all types of online guides but still cant do it. Maybe im using to hard of locks? idk

No. I think they're probably fine in comparison to something like a SouthOrd set... but I wouldn't say that they're comparable to a upper-end commercially-produced set (e.g., something like a Peterson set). But, you'd also pay about four times as much for a Peterson set, so I'd say that they're good value for the money. (And there are some extremely talented folks on this board: if you look around at some of the homemade picks that they're making, you'll find that they leave many of the retail picksets in the dust.)

The guides that you can find on-line vary a great deal in quality (and I'm not sure which locks you've been trying to pick) but have a look at the links that I posted above: you may be pleasantly surprised at how much good advice is there. One observation that your comment raises, though, is that you may have been using way too much force in your single-pin picking if you've been breaking and bending your SouthOrd picks.

As an aside, just one friendly request: a lot of the users on this site didn't learn English as their first language. Nobody here is trying to be the grammar police, but if you punctuate your posts and try to avoid "text message" short-forms you'll find that you'll get a lot more help -- mostly because many more people from other places will be able to understand your questions. (And I honestly try to practice what I preach in that regard: I typed my earlier post entirely on my cellphone, including the web page links... it takes an extra minute or two, but it really does make a difference.) :)

When I first started picking in June of 2005, I also had that Southord set, and since I didn't know about this forum, I had no one to give me advice about how to properly use my picks. Because of this I ended up breaking my W rake very quickly, and all of my tension wrenches were either broken or bent. Wanna know why? I was being very heavy handed when trying to pick locks and instead of just applying enough tension to keep the pins raised to the shear line, I would put so much pressure on the wrench that A. the wrench would bend or break, and B. it was so hard for the pins to be lifted by the picks that the pick tips also bend out of shape or totally broke off.

The Southord set is a good set, if I were to buy one right now and use it for 6 months, it would still look the same because I learned not to force the lock to open. Lockpicking is about finesse not brute force.

The HPC is a good set too, but so is Majestic, Peterson, and Brockage. It all depends on what kind of handles you like and if you pick regular or high security locks. Some picks are thinner, some are thicker, and some have rougher finishes while others are smoothed, sanded, and deburred with more care.

lower how much tension you use and you'll be ok,

MasterLock #3 would be a good place to start. Pick up a few, used if you can find them. Some are very easy, some sort of easy, a few not so easy.

The local hardware recycling store usually has a drawer full, mixed in with the Kwikset and Defiant sets pulled from doors. Occasionally one finds better stuff.
It's a good day when I learn something new.

Buy a cheap deadbolt from the hardware store. Search around the forums for how to take out some pins to make it easier to start with. Hope that helps.

And stay away from Kwikset SmartKey locks. It'll just add to the frustration.

I started out by picking padlocks. I think some of the easier ones to pick are master M5 and the master 140. The 140 is a little harder due to the security pin but its a good place to start.
