You're on the right path, but remember, just pushing all the pins up or down (depending on how you're holding the lock) is not how lock picking works. You only push each pin to a certain distance, just like the real key would push them depending on how deep the cuts on the key are. Some pins only get pushed a little, others mid way, some all the way. Pushing all the pins up the same distance will not open the lock unless you look at the key and happen to see that all 4 valleys are the same exact depth. I don't think that happens a lot, but there is a chance that several will be the same.
