Kwikset Cylinder Rotation

Postby sekunasekuna » 23 Apr 2010 4:24

Greetings, all.

Been leisurely picking for a few years and love being able to help a friend when they lock themselves out of their apartment or lose their key to their lock at the gym. However, recently I've not exactly been the hero, and it's starting to bug me. Sometimes very easily picked locks (e.g. kwikset deadbolts) foil me by not rotating completely. I've tried to research this but haven't come up with anything. Even when I'm able to produce additional tension besides that of the wrench, it stops about halfway through the rotation, and to attempt to rotate it would be to break the lock.

Is this a common situation? What am I missing? I assume it's not a security pin because, again, the cylinder does indeed rotate, but not passed 180 degrees or so.

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much, everyone.

First rule as a hobbiest lockpicker is never pick a lock in use.

I suggest that the most often reason for the cylinder not turning completely is not because of the lock, but more often because the bolt is out of alignment with the bolt hole.

Meaning there is pressure holding the bolt from activating.

Alleviating the pressure by putting a wedge under the door, sometimes helps to re-align the bolt position, allowing the bolt to freely operate.
