Its a tough call really. iv seen some amazing people pick some amazing locks. Its all about practice and knowing what you are up against and having the right tools.

In my view to be classed as the best picker you would be able to open 90%+ of any lock you are up against.

This would require a great deal of product knowledge as well as picking skill.

I know really good lever lock pickers but then they cant pick simple pinned locks, and vice versa.

Another variable is the state of the lock. Its fairly easy to take a lock out of its box and pick away, but a really good picker can take it to the next level and open locks that are weathered and worn which affects the feel of the lock.

Its a very broad statement to be the best lockpicker.

A competition of 5 random locks is in order to really single any one out 8)

-Random bs pinned cylinder
-Random Bs lever
-Random dimple cylinder
-Random safelock
-And a wild card lock such as ingersoll or kaba

If we could organise a few clubs in the UK, like Toool or LSI do in the Netherlands and US, we could have an annual 'open' competition or even a continous competition like Toool operate.

I'm doing my bit trying to sort out meets in my area, but in general UK pickers seem apathetic in travelling regularly to meets. That said, anyone interested in joining a UK Northants club should take a look in Locksports Local at viewtopic.php?p=233704#p233704 and post your interest.

I am due to attend a Hackerspace meeting in Northampton 18/5/2010 to discuss Locksport and drum up some new recruits. If you can make it that day join the googlegroup http://groups.google.com/group/northackton and come along, if only to chew the fat and have a few beers.

NKT has my vote, no question. First native English speaker to make it to the finals of the Dutch Open & tears through high-sec locks as well.

Spinnaz - a great tool maker isn't necessarily a great picker.

I know, but I just couldn't resist the temptation to respond with a snarky reply. :P
