Question >> Master Lock No. 40

Postby Desette » 28 Jun 2010 0:04

Hey Everyone,

OK I have been picking pretty simple locks for a long time and havent ever had such a huge problem with one lock as of this, its so frustrating that its gotten me for several weeks off and on. I try leaving it for days at a time and whenever I go back to it I can't get it.

The Culprit? Master Lock No. 40!

So I have tried using several pick sets from my Southard Pocket set to my Bogota "Custom" Entry Toolset and I have avail.

It sometimes feel like ai get all 4 pins but this never works for me. I can sometimes hear all of them when I release the minimal pressure and I swear I hear 4 pins but with no luck I can't get this open. Maybe its just this lock but it frustrates me to all hell.

Anyways... Does anyone have a suggestion because I know it can be done and with these picks so why can't I get it.

Please any suggestions will help, even if its that I am a n00b :)

I cant remember if these have any security pins (ie. Spool, mushroom or serrated pins) in them, my guess is no but maybe someone else can chime in, from what I remember though theyre and easy pick. My guess is that it is the high/low combo of the first pin and the second one in thats frustrating you when trying to pick it. You can tell from the key that the first pin is going to set very low, making it difficult to get to the later pins which are all fairly high up.

Try using your tension wrench in the top of the keyway, and use a deep hook to get at the pins behind the 1st.

Hope this helps!

These don't have sec pins. Also they only pick one direction, which I assume is CW, but I'm not sure. I have heard that sometimes highER tension is better for these locks, but still don't go overboard. GL

they pick only clockwise, definately don't have security pins, and heavier tension works great with these. also the front pin (closest one to you) may not need to be set. if it does though, try setting it last and avoid moving it with the shaft of your pick while picking the other pins. stick with a hook, i don't think you'll have much luck with a rake on this one.

this, as with the Brinks R70, requires odd tension to open. i found that paying extra attention to the tension needed to open the lock with the actual key helps when picking it. the tension is very similar to the R70, but the master lock doesnt have the security pins. Also if you have a large half diamond pick you can try that.
