I first want to thank everybody on this forum who've helped me gain a fascination and love for the puzzle that is locks. I've learned so much, just by lurking.

I realize that I am a complete noob and that I don't have enough cred to participate in the advanced locks section, but I have a question pertaining to a Sargent and Greenleaf 8077a (and I'm asking how to manipulate it).

Basically, I was given this lock as a gift. I instructed my friend who gave it to me to set the combination without telling me, and I would try to manipulate it. He set the combination as instructed, while referencing the instruction manual just to be sure it was done correctly (it had been a while since he's done this). Then he double checked the combination at it worked fine.

I foolishly tried manipulation the lock based upon what I thought might be going on inside the lock, but it got me nowhere. So I bought a book about manipulating combination locks, read up, and got to work. I was on the first step to of the process (and I had reset the lock many times at this point), when the lock popped open in my hands!

There was one specific thing that I did in attempt to follow the first step, that I have been able to replicate, and I was wondering if by friend did not set the combination correctly or my lock is simply too worn to function (it was built in 1986, but is in surprisingly good shape with virtually no scratches).

If someone would be kind enough to discuss this over PM, I would be grateful. I'm honestly not looking for general information about manipulating locks; I understand I have to earn that journey - it just seems like this is such a fluke thing.

Thanks!
