Im new to lockpicking and am looking to purchase some picks. Is the only difference between the premium lock picks available in the "build your own kit" (or individually sold picks), is that the have reinforced metal handles and is this just for comfort and feel?

You'll want handles for both comfort and feel. It's worth it.

It's also pretty easy to add your own handles. I use several layers of shrink tubing, or this neat dip plastic coating .. lemme see if I can find it.

Yeah, here it is:

I did that with the singles that I bought back in the day, after sanding them smooth.

okay thanks i was just going to add a grip if i did not come with one but i was just checking to make sure that the quality on both were the same it was just the grips were difference. Also is it much easier to pick a smaller lock such as a padlock with slimline tools than regular?

It depends on the width of the keyway, if it's a very narrow keyway or one with tight warding then slimlines are a distinct advantage.

If it's not overly narrow, regular picks can do just as well however ones that aren't as tall are more beneficial in smaller locks.

Hope this helps.
