Try Motor, Haynes or Autodata.
There are a couple of others, but these should start you out.
They are BIG, BIG books.
The best teacher is a junk yard though. Once you have taken a few of these out from various makes of cars you begin to see a lot of similarities in construction.
Then, you just have to focus on the locking components which do vary not just across different makes, but also different models.
