Getting Started - Locks and Assembly

Postby werelwolf » 22 Jul 2010 13:25

Hello all, I've been a long time lurker, and now looking to get of my backend and start picking. I have the supplies to craft some basic tools with the shop at my local commuity college, as well as some cheap Mastercraft padlocks I am playing with, I do have some further questions.

I was looking over several of the FAQs I've found on the forum and saw the disassembly of different locks. Would I be able to do this with a common door knob lock, dead bolt lock, and the like? Idealy, I'd like to slot a lock into just a peice of wood and have that to work against since the tools to craft these are easy for me to get a hold of at college. I would also like to easily be able to disassemble say, for example, a deadbolt door lock so I can customize it and work only with a couple pins at a time.

Does this assembly/process work with most installable household locks?

Thanks very much for any information in this matter, I look forward to having a crack at it!

Hi W,

I'm new around here but for a common door knob lock or chamber lock this is a good palce to start:

Mounting the lock in a frame looks like it might be the way to go. Either that or fix it to something with a small vice. Most tutorials I've seen so far though the picker just holds the lock in his hands.

One other thing- make sure you stay away from security pins if you're just starting out. A standard Schlage lock would be a good choice.

Thanks for the advice! I'm definately on the lookout for security pins, and I'll keep that name in mind, but I'm really just gonna go for whatever they have available at the local hardware store. I really look forward to taking them apart and modding them up, I like tinkering in all kinda of stuff :D
