"fair enough" but is that because you dont know the answer or wont tell? an apprentice asking for help, is it really too much to ask?

I have never heard this term "contact point file" but maybe it's explained in the documentation that came with your locksmithing training?
What "contact points" might it refer to? The key contacting something? The key contacting the pins maybe, when it's inserted all the way?

Cheers

You are not asking for help thou, you are asking for a handout, and your typing/grammar skills are horrible as well. I think you should be more concerned about actually learning the course material first hand, not asking for a "hand out" on a hobby lockpicking site.. (this is not a locksmith site)Yes, we have locksmith members here, but they are here for the hobby as well. :)

I mean, what you are doing is basically cheating- and robbing yourself the full knowledge of understanding why something is used at a certain time, or for a certain application. If this is a career you are hoping to pursue, well, how would you expect to keep a job or run a business if you don't really know/understand the content of what you were taught?

Thats why there are instructors for you to ask questions.. Plus you get bonus marks for participating in class discussions.. ;)

Just some thoughts.. Happy picking.

I think the name originally came from the automotive world, where that style of file was used for touching up distributor contact points and spark plugs during a tune-up. I've seen a couple of different variations of files labelled as a "contact point" file, but it's usually just a small rectangular file with a fine (double-cut) face, and rounded edges (i.e., only the "face" of the file cuts, and not the edges).

ah, ok, just a rectangular-cross-section file that's used to file something flat -
but why would you want to file the back of the key in the first place?

I made that up because that seemed like the least likely answer. If grahamb84 continues in this fashion he will arrive at the correct answer. Alternatively if he read my post and ran off to mark the test without checking the rest of the thread, lulz will ensue.

-steve

PS: I'm not even in training and I know what the most likely answer is from your description of the file.
