Foil Impressioning

Postby hozer2k » 6 Jan 2004 1:21

I was just reading through some material and saw some things on foil impressioning. This seems like it would be quicker and easier, why isnt it talked about more? Wouldnt this make an auto key much easier to make?

Oh, yeah....I have the h2k video, but he does a foil impression of a different lock, not a standard 5 pin tumbler or car lock..thats what I am more interested in. I saw some tools that look like teeth somewhere and I guess you wrap it in foil. I think I have an idea of the method, but have not seen any instruction on it...cant remember where I saw the tools either.

The H2k Video refered to Dimple keys. Basically they got a key and put dimples as deep as the deepest one in all the spots where a dimple may be. Then they wrapped this key in foil which pushed the dimples into the foil so you can cut your own key, I believe he even opened the lock with this.

You saw the tools in Tobias's powerpoint presentation, for which someone posted a link (or bumped the thread) yesterday.

And it would be quicker and easier than impressioning, not quicker and easier than picking. But you'd still use regular impressioning anyway, because the point of impressioning is to produce a key, not to open the lock -- and a tinfoil key isn't something you want to stick on your keyring and toss in your pocket.

But there is a distinct difference. You can then read your foil key and make a real key from that if so desired. I would want to do that anyway because an impressioned key doesnt look quite right anyhow.

Plus I would think the skill level is less to do a foil key and couple that with less time it would be usefull for tumblers as well as cars. Another advantage is you wouldnt need a blank for specific locks ahead of time (some of my lock keys are thicker than others).

Basically it has its disantages and advantages, but being that I am not very skilled...I think this would be a better approach.

Hey, sure, give it a shot. I just think that if it was really a better approach, it wouldn't be half as obscure.

Good point, I wonder this myself. Perhaps because it is not as advanced it is not popular among locksmiths and the like...but may be a good technique for a beginner.

I think the method isnt as popular because there arent many Falle foil kits available. Im sure that some locksmith....ahem..... with a code machine and a slot cutter. could easily make the keys, and just gridn a bit of the sides, to allow for the shim needed for insertion etc. Someone with machines ......Illl help design/etc if someone would just cut some slots.

Can someone with the foil impressioner make a sketch with dimensions or just give the dimensions to it. It should be simple if you have one.

i think that sketches aren't necessary. just mark some points on blank for pins where they go, file down what's not needed, remember about grinding/filing some stock for shim and i think key should work. hadn't noticed anything more complex than that in producing this kind of tool during my research. i'm in the middle of producing pin tumbler foil impressioning set(starting with one key), for most popular tumblers in my region. when i'll finish you get results with photos.
