I bought this jewelry travel case at a thrift shop - the key is inside - and when the clerk was ringing it up - she CLOSED it and it locked. Didn't notice until I got home. I really don't want to return it. There must be a simple way to pick this lock - just have never seen one like it before. Don't' want to scratch it all up or break it - can't pay a locksmith more than what I paid for it! LOL
The attached picture is not my case - but the lock looks the same. - Thanks in advance! What does Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."" mean? How do I show you my lock? Is there a place on this site with pics of all the different locks and their names?

Means you cannot store your image directly on LP101 server. missguided wrote: How do I show you my lock?
Make an account at http://photobucket.com/ or similar and use the IMG tag it supplies to post here.

Nope. Sorry pal, based on your user name and the fact you cant even provide a pic of the actual case in question, I doubt you will get much help here. We aren't criminals, as much as some people like to think lockpicking=criminal activity. Post a clear photo of your actual box and of the key sitting inside it, and we'll see if we can lend some advice. To use the IMG tags you type [img]theURLofyourpic[/img] Thanks for playing, Squelchtone

Dear Mr. Squelchtone - My, my, we are a bit cranky today.... have you had your bran? My User Name happens to be the name of my boat - The Missguided - It's a play on words, get it? I am not a pal, I am a gal. I got out my camera - took the pics - loaded on Photobucket - and here they are: http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m99/ ... el%20Case/You asked for a pic of the key that is inside - DUH - that is why I am writing in this forum - the key is locked inside! I did see the key before I bought it - could not describe it for a million bucks - but it was one of those little suitcase type keys so I figured it couldn't be that hard to pick it. I am guessing most criminals would not post to your forum - wouldn't they just bust it open to steal all the goodies? LOL Thanking you all again in advance - Marti[/size]

http://cgi.ebay.com/antique-steel-lever-lock-and-key-/280557144995?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4152824ba3did the key look anything like the one pictured with the lock in the link above... looking at that "keyway" in the images you provided all i can think of is a double sided lever lock... which would not be easy... the rivits (1 on either side of the keyway) would be where the levers... well lever and the key woule lign up the gates tword the top. if it is a lever lock good luck if you know nothing about picking... only other choice is a warded lock, in which case you should just get some wire and bend it into an L shapd and poke around a bit... if its nether of those i have no help good luck

Wow, you have big balls lady to come to our forum and act the way you do. Not very nice of you to come to our house asking for help and when we show some suspicion you get all bitchy. What you call cranky is what I call ruling with an iron fist because too many idiots would rather turn this nice forum into a sh*thole full of crap posts and questions that have already been answers dozens of times, but some people posting don't have the time to be bothered to search. Let me address some of your response.. A. In your original story you said you didn't notice until you got home, so I figured your box had a window to look through, and you noticed the key inside, I guess that isn't the case. B. What would you think if a new user with 1 post had a name like missguided and was hoping to get into a jewlery box? you'd think the exact same thing I did. How the hell was I supposed to know about your boat, I'm not psychic. C. Yes, they are easy to pick, if you have the tools and experience. A random person with a paperclip isn't getting into one of these unless you're really really lucky. And asking us for a 5 minute how to, is still not going to help much in opening the container. D. Go to a locksmith, they probably have trunk and luggage keys hanging on the peg ready for sale for a fiver. I swear, if we get any more n00bs this week asking how to open something they lost keys to, I'm gonna blow my top. WE ARE NOT A 1-800-CALLALOCKSMITH 24/7 Tech Support Line. Now where's my god da*n bowl of bran? Squelchtone

Locksmith Army: Thanks for the reply - I really didn't examine the key, just checked that there WAS one. But it makes sense that it would look like that. With a very small needle nose I can make the lock swivel and looks like a spring underneath, it does appear to have a double sided lock thingy. I will take it to a locksmith and see what they have.
Squelch: When this case was in the thrift store it was sitting open. Its got all kinds of neat drawers and pockets and hooks and tabs -will be great to keep the jewelry I use most often. I looked in all the little drawers, and in one of the pockets was a little key. I tucked it back in and took it to the counter to BUY it and the clerk shut it and clicked the lock without me noticing it - you know how ditsy women can be... I should have watched her like a hawk!
I apologize for bothering you - I had the "missguided" idea that this was Lock Picking 101 - not Extreme Lock Picking for Really Cool People Only. This is a solvable problem - I am just naturally curious and try to figure things out and learn. I will put my nOOb tail between my legs (no balls there) and go see a hopefully friendly locksmith.
I am sorry that you are so unhappy. I wish you well.

Yeah, I can't please everyone all the time, and some people get real touchy when you don't give them the answer they are looking for as if they are somehow entitled to it. So yeah, I'm an ass sometime, but it's for the common good of the forum to weed out bad apples, and if someone isn't a bad apple, then they at least learn that we police the forum because we care. PhreakerGeek wrote:CENSORED LARGE BLOCK OF TEXT because poster has quite the mouth on them. You've obviously lost all interest in helping people learn <censored>
I haven't lost interest in helping people, but I'm not here at your beck and call either. People don't even try these days, they just say, help me open this lock, or give me a tutorial now, and then they reply 30 minutes later with "cmon, doesnt someone have a tutorial or can help me open this?" You have to have reasonable expectations on a forum where people come and go, read posts one day and dont read any the next. If someone has a legit question that doesn't smell of "whats this person up to" then I always try to be most helpful. Am I cranky a lot because people whine a lot? yes, yes I am. PhreakerGeek wrote:There's a nice way to tell someone that this isn't a forum for thieves and crooks. Then there's the asinine <censored> way, YOUR way, which is plain and simply <censored> wrong.
Thanks for the personal attack, I'm glad you made an account here so you could talk smack in defense of your friend missguided. I see you're both from the Tampa area, so I'm sure you're a buddy who came here to back her up. The next thing you said was so vulgar, it's amazing that you are actually friends with missguided who seems well mannered in comparison. PhreakerGeek wrote:Maybe you wouldn't squealch so <censored> much if you'd <censorned> and <censored>
As far as anyone thinking you're cool? You're not. You're just a <censored>.
I never claimed to be cool man, I'm just a guy who picks and collects locks. I think we've all had our fun, thread locked. Squelchtone

Lets all get along now..
Please respect the mods of this site- they have a thankless job.
Also, please do not play with colors- those are reserved for more important things. (yes, you can use it for highlighting a word or two, but don't make a post all in different colors, LARGE the font, etc
And I agree- even though squelchtone was a little brash with his responses (and hey, I am as well) he is correct- we don't pick locks in use, and we don't really like offering advice to new members how to pick a lock when its clearly in the locked position.
