different thickness handles

Postby Fuqua » 19 Oct 2010 22:37

so i recieved my southord pick set today. http://www.lockpickshop.com/MPXS-20.html

i wasnt able to get much practice today as they showed up later than normal for a delivery. my question is that a few of the picks are identical in profile, identical in thickness, and temper, except for the handle or lack there of. a half diamond and a low or medium feeler pick i received 2 of each, one was just a single piece of metal while the other had a 3 piece handle welded together. im just curious why there are different handles on what are essentially the same pick. im guessing it has something to do with being able to feel how the pins react to being picked but just want to ask the experts.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

By low or medium feeler pick I assume you mean a short hook? If this is the case you probably got 2 of those picks because they are the most commonly used. The handles as far as I can tell are just preference. some people like a thicker thing to grip some don't, some like plastic/shrink wrap on the handle some don't. Personally I prefer the laminated handles but I get good feedback from both. Just give em both a try and decide for yourself.

Yep, just preference. Be warned, those single sheet picks will start to feel like they're cutting into your fingers quickly!

yep i can reconize that. Put something on your "long" finger to protect if your gonna practice for a longer period.

or wrap a few turns of duck tape around it.
the redundency in the pick tip designs is common, you can use the single piece one as a blank to make a thin shafted pick or a shorter hook or whatever.
remember the commercial pick stampings are made into sets just for quick sale, not necessarily anything else.

From what i have gathered they make them just for what the user likes best. If you like the thin handles keep them like that, but if you don;t end up liking them the other posters had some good home remedies to it, if you prefer the store bought to the home made, they also carry http://www.lockpickshop.com/VG-9.html which slip over the handles if i have done my reading properly.
