ABUS steel-o-chain question

Postby danny_nt » 27 Nov 2010 16:22

Hi guys, i have a very stupid problem.
I have for my bike this kind of chain:
Image
Last year i break one key from accident, didnt know that they break so easy.
I've tried to make some more spares but i didn't find some blank keys.
Last week i've managed to lose my bike key together with the last chain key.
So now i have one bike locked home.
My question is how tricky this mechanism really is?
I have some basic knowledge about some locks, manage to make some spare keys, but never picklock before.
Now i have two options: picklocking or flex the chain.
Time is not an issue, i've got time until next spring to free my bike :)

Looks like a wafer or a pin tumbler lock. The lock may be a double sided wafer lock, or perhaps the key is double bitted to make it reversible.

Regardless, I believe you could open that lock with hand pick tools. The process for picking is the same, the difficulty is subjective.

The question is, since you no longer have the keys, would it be possible and economically feasible for a locksmith to rekey your lock? I suspect possibly not. Depending how tough the chain itself is, and how difficult the lock proves to be picked, it may make more sense to destroy the chain since it seems to be integrated with the lock itself.
