Can anyone tell me what kinda cylinder this has?

Postby tony2001 » 10 Nov 2010 12:22

Got it on ebay to lock up my bike, with only 1 key. Doing a google search; it seems only one company in Washington can make me spare keys. Do you guys know of any locksmiths in NYC, capable of making me spare keys. Also do you know which cylinder came standard on these its the Abloy 242. Thank You in advance :)

This is the problem with buying high security locks off of eBay without knowing who originally owned them...

At this point in time you will probably be unable to obtain additional copies of the current key for this padlock... Because you haven't made any mention of receiving the key code ID card with it... High security locking system manufacturers and the locksmiths who service those products can not make additional copies of cut keys without that ID card which was issued to the original purchaser...

You are probably looking at having that padlock re-keyed to a new bitting and receiving an ID card for that new bitting...

As far as there only being a company in Washington which can produce additional keys, enough of your key can not be seen to properly identify its profile -- if it is a restricted profile that may indeed be accurate, but then again you will be having the lock re-keyed to a new bitting as you do not have the ID card for your current key...

Good luck...

Largely, what Evan said is mostly accurate. However Abloy Exec is out of patent protection and can still be copied legally.

Finding a locksmith who (a) has a machine (b) has the correct key profile (c) is willing to cut it without the ID card, may be the dilemma.

The keys are easily decoded by sight and a new copy can be made using appropriate machinery. Estimated cost at about $15.00 each.

Agreed on all prior posts, but you can also get that padlock re-cored to the new Abloy Protec keyway and mechanism.

You can contact SecuritySnobs.com in Washington or BayAreaLocks.com in California and tell them what you told us. Heck, mention lockpicking101.com and say we sent you.

good luck,

I got it for $71 shipped, it seems to have the same dimensions as the 342 which goes for around $140 (according to the Security Snob website).

Called Security Snobs yesterday to get some info on changing out the cylinder, they said they cant do it cause they dont service the older model Abloys.

I'll keep researching to see if i can get a dust cover for it, since its being used outside and some more keys made. Thank You guys again for all the information :)

I think its an Abloy Disclock or Disclock pro because of the keyhead.

This is not true, atleast here in Finland. I´m anxiously waiting for its "protection of design" to expire so I can make the keys. There is only one place in Skandinavia where they cut Abloy Exec keys -The Abloy factory in Joensuu, Finland. And you need a keycard to get more keys.

I stand corrected, thanks. I meant Disklok or Disklok Pro.

Almost looks like an Abloy Elite key, can't quite tell because of the reflection near the tip.
If that groove is the same down the whole length of the key I'd say it's a Disklock Elite, which we can cut without a registration card as the patent has expired. $16.50 each.
Otherwise we can rekey it for $35 and $16.50/key.
We're in Toronto Canada.
