Impossible padlock?

Postby SPP » 26 Nov 2010 15:05

I have a padlock (no name) bought for like £ 2. Pin tumbler lock. 4 pins. No security pins. It should be a piece of cake to pick it….It’s not!

Pin 3 and 4 are binding at EXACTELY the same time!! It’s evenly difficult (i.e. almost impossible) to rake or SPP (although it works after hours). I’ve never even heard of it before. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Try oiling the lock? Found it helps with cheap nasty locks.

There's this really simple cheap lock that's been getting to me lately... I think it's called... Medeco? Yeah something like that. :P

Thanks illusion! The lock is still tricky as h*ll, but it's now possible to SPP. I used Beretta Gun oil!

I'm really not clued up on oils, but thinner oil seem to last longer in locks before it goes skanky and gums the lock up, although thick oil and grease slows the pins when they drop down; this is documented as making locks easier to pick in some instances although obviously, it's probably more trouble than it's worth for recreational picking.

There are plenty of cheap locks that I find a pain to pick, but I also find they open quite easily when raked with a bit of 'bounce' on the tension wrench. Really heavy tension on the plug often sorts these cheapy locks out too, although it's harsh on the lock mechanism and you will likely have to manually set any security pins that catch... Obviously this is OTT for general home picking but it has its uses.

I'd leave the piece of junk alone and work on a better lock, it's probably going to be more enjoyable/productive. :)

I don't recommend the use of oil at all to be honest. dirt and dust can stick to the oil and further jam the lock. I suggest a dry lubricant such as graphite powder. Its cheap and you get ALOT of use out of one little tube of it. Just dont use too much. Since it is a solid, it can build up and create problems. Put some in, lightly rake or wiggle inside the lock to get all the lubricant moved evenly though out the lock and into the in chambers, then tap it against a rag or napkin on your desk to knock out any excess powder (the rag just makes it so theres little clean up..I choose not to use one because...well I dont know)
