Kwikset Pin Size?

Postby Farlark » 9 Dec 2010 1:31

Today I visited a locksmith while looking for security pins for my kwikset practice cylinder. But I was told that if he didn't know the proper size of the top pins I was requesting, he couldn't give me any.

Does the diameter of kwikset top pins really vary from cylinder to cylinder, or was there likely a miscommunication?

I don't have my pin kit here but think there are 2 sizes for Kw top pins. Just take out a top pin and measure it. Kw's are pretty sloppy and it won't matter much as long as you are close in size

Maybe he was confused what you were looking for...without looking it up....i usually use .175 or .180
So many tools out there to be bought by locksmiths....the trick is to know what to buy.

The top pins from my Kwikset 660 deadbolt measure .115" in diameter and .180" tall. The diameter being .115" is important; the length not so much, anything from .160" to .180" would be acceptable. I would recommend using Schlage spool pins they are easy to get and measure .115" in diameter and .165" tall.

Funny, he should have a size chart in his rekeying box. Though for security, I would never trust Krapset. I just hope youre having it repined for practice purposes only.

Kwikset data sheets call out top pins 0.115" diameter and 0.180" length as standard.

However, they also show a 0.160" length which is used in their "Protecto Key" feature which is basically a construction key feature with the balls.

It sounds a lot more like he was politely declining your business...
