What is this type of pick used for?

Postby thesaltydalty » 8 Jan 2011 23:20

On one of the templates by snikrepmada posted in the collection of templates thread there was a pick that looked like this. I'm new to lock picking and I'm going to make my first pick. I thought this one would be good practice learning to use my grinder, but I don't want to waste my time making an oversized metal toothpick. Is it anything like the peterson knife bypass tools or is it completely different? Thanks in advance for anyone who helps.

Depends on what thickness you make it... if it's made thin enough, it can be used to decode some multi-wheel combination locks. If it's the thickness of a normal pick, it can be used for bypassing certain mechanisms and it's also possible to pick locks with even bittings by simply rocking over the pins. Not ideal, but it can be done with practice and it's funky when it works

Isn't that a straight knife?

There is a topic about it here on LP101 that discusses some possible uses.
