Where to buy more pins?

Postby Shivahn » 16 Jan 2011 17:09

Hey everyone,

I've tried to find a thread that answered this question, but didn't see any while browsing and couldn't really find a way to search for it as the words "pins" and "security" are in every other thread.

I've got a Kwikset deadbolt that I've been picking for fun and would like to start trying to pick things with security pins. I figured that since I have a deadbolt already, I might as well get some pins for it as I can then play around with the number of pins, number of security pins, order of pins and so on.

The problem is that I can't find anywhere to buy just a few pins, or security pins. Everything I've tried on Google is giving me either hundred-dollar rekeying sets or huge packages of bottom pins. Does anyone know of anywhere where I can buy small volumes of pins, or cheap sets with security pins included?

Go to lockpicks.com or Foley-Belsaw. All the other places are locksmith only that I know of. Maybe somebody else can chime in on where to look.

Lockpicks.com is his best bet. Prices are near comparable to distributors. They sell spool pins for Kwikset (.160) which, for your purposes, will be more than suitable (even if you decide to put them on a different manufacturer's lock in the future, such as Schlage - come back to ask for more on that if you get to that point because that's a topic in and of itself). They come in a pack of hundred. Sounds like a lot, but in reality, make the investment for only $4.90.

I would be interested in that info, I picked up some spools the same size, but really don't know what all I can use them for.

Ok, thanks. I'm probably gonna order the spools later today. Five dollars for a hundred pins isn't so bad, it's still a pretty cheap hobby :P

Basically was just going to suggest that he not even bother putting spools on anything less than a 3 pin. Wouldn't even get the benefits of the spool pin; not enough of the thing portion of the shear line to differentiate from any other top pin.
