High security padlock?

Postby jcommando9 » 5 Feb 2011 12:58

Hi, Just wanted to know some opinions on how to secure my shop. I've seen some video on how easy it is to pick some Master padlock I'm using and i'm kinda worried. So I'm coming to the expert asking what padlock would be hard to pick except for the most seasoned veterans. Looking for some commercial padlock that's more secured than the one at Lowe's would be willing to spend $100+/ea.
My 1st line of security would be some padlocks that would hard for most bolt cutters (any recommendations?), i don't mind that they might be easy to pick, just need the brute strength look to deter.
2nd line of defense would be the higher security padlocks.

Thank you for everyone's response.

Hello jcommando9, welcome to lockpicking101:

It would help greatly if you could describe what type of doors or gates you are trying to secure with the padlocks you are looking to buy...

Sometimes greater security hardening is achieved by using a better type of lock/hasp combination (like a "hockey puck" type lock with no exposed shackle to cut) than an exposed hasp... There are improved techniques to install padlock hasps which make them more difficult to remove...

There are quite a number of threads here on this site which debate the various security levels of the higher security locks, however your question sounds more to me to be one of application and how to install the correct type of hasp for your specific security needs...

Maybe if you could post some pictures of the doors/gates you want to lock on a photo hosting site and provide the links for them in a reply in this thread...

If you really want a lock that no one will be attacking, that will shift the vector of attack to the chimney (santaclausattack)
or something,

Look for hocky puck locks. American makes one and it comes in a 6 pin version. This lock can be picked but the lock puts the keyway at an angle to the door that makes tensioning difflicult without a tensor bent specifically for that application.
this would be good to have if you are not confronting an expert picker.

Medeco for an order of magnitude in price makes one that would be as secure as you will ever need.

I agree on Medeco locks but there are a lot of peoples thinking that medeco locks are easy to picks
i don't think they are easy to pick
before i say that i will have to say Kwiset and schlage are easy lock to picks.

Medeco comes in versions as weak as the old IBM computer locks with 3 pins all the way to more secure locks with 6 pins.

It is one thing to pick a medeco at your brightly lit computer desk and another to do it in a position where you are on your knees attempting to pick it from underneath or at some odd angle.

A plan to open a medeco in a covert attack would be more practical as an attempt to learn the bitting on the key, from a photo or just from pressing the key between two foil wrapped strips of juicyfruit gum. the information could be taken back to kgb or fbi headquarters and interpreted. The fbi's lockpicker, H edward tickel has said on barry wels blog or somewhere that he prefered impressioning keys, which has the result of producing a key that then could be reused on another occasion. The watergate burglars were fools, besides being tools.
