sorry for the double post:

@ el AB - are you a lawyer? I just noticed your SN.

@ El Ab and Unlisted - The cutaway isn't just for practice, its also for show. I run a small locksport group and its a great conversation piece when I'm trying to attract new recruits.

nataz wrote:Hello again friends. I purchased a disassembled SG 6700 type II safe lock off of ebay over break to make a cutaway out of, but I'm having trouble putting it back together and setting the combination. Since I'm not talking about manipulation or DE I *think* its okay to have in the open forum. If not, apologies in advance.

Essentially all I want to know is how to "install" this lock onto a piece of wood.

Here are all the pieces.

Image

I know that the black plastic piece goes over the shaft of the dial, and then the shroud goes on. Obviously the shaft extends through the body of the locking mech and into the brass cam. The back plate has to be on for it to work as well, again for obvious reasons.

Here is a picture with how I thought it should be assembled. I hand aligned the wheels, slotted the nose and the cam, and retracted the bolt.

Image

The problem I have is three fold. 1) the shaft is now way to long to attach the back plate, and 2) if I spin the shaft out so there is more room, when I turn the wheel it hits the threads and forces the shaft into the back plate. 3) how do I set the combination with the provided set key?

What am I missing here? I feel like an idiot trying to put this together.
Help?

Okay, I feel a little bit foolish. There was another bag of parts which I assumed was just screws and a key (we'll talk about this in a second), however I missed the small brass (?) L shaped piece of metal that locks the shaft to the cam - mysteries 1 & 2 solved.

Here is the offending part partially raised up - I'm calling it a set pin for lack of a better term.

Image

However problem #3 - How to set the combination is still up in the air. I have the change keyand I know the small end fits into a slot on the wheels that you can only get to when the back is off. I also know that the large "Arrow" end fits into a corrisponding hole in the back of the case. Not exactly sure what to do here. I also know that the second mark on the dial is involved in setting the number for the new combination, but I'm not really sure how it works and would still appreciate help.

I'm not sure I'm assembleing the dial correctly. there are 3 main parts shown below in front and back. 1) round plastic spacer. 2) main dial body with built wafer (?) lock. 3) shroud for the dial which has the marker to read the number, and the marker thats involved in resetting the combo.

If you look at the front pic of the shroud you can see two rectangular boxes on either side of the center hole directly underneath the combination marker. These boxes have screw marks on them, so I assume this is where I screw the shroud into the stand. I place the plastic spacer face down into the center hole, and then slide the dial on top of that. Looks like the wafer lock works to lock the dial and keep it from spinning. I think this is right, but I won't know for sure until tomorrow when I drill a hole/screw everything down into a piece of wood.

Whoop, this is fun.

BTW, does anyone have an idea where I can get plexi-glass? Is it called something else at Home Depot or Lowes? When I make the cutaway it looks like the only thing I have to be really careful on the back plate is the brass relocker needs to be depressed slightly below the plain of the sidewall. Looks like a lot of the sidewalls can also be taken out and replaced to let in more light. I'm looking forward to shareing pics.

peace out

Try Home Hardware, or Home Depot. IMO, you will probably have a easier time finding a smaller piece at a smaller type hardware store, than a big box (where you may be forced to purchase a whole sheet- which are kinda large- roughly the same as drywall panels)

Call some local places around you first. Use glass shops as a LAST option, if they are anything like the ones around here- I almost got charged $60.00 for a 6"x6" by 1/16" thick piece once. (went to home hardware, exact same piece cost me 5 bucks)

Sorry, Cannot help you there, I already think this thread has "gone" too far into advanced information with the dissection of your lock, high res photos, and detailed info.

Just don't have the heart to move it- yet. (that, or I am too lazy)

[quote="nataz"]any help with setting the combination?

You can find user instructions for these locks on the manufacturer's website, they are not exactly secret.
The only secret about these locks is the currently programmed combination sequence; and with an open lock, that's also not difficult to find out.

Cheers

derp, must be late. I didn't even think of going to S&G's website. I know in theory how to find the current combination - I just didn't want to talk about that in the open. :D

Since you hand aligned the wheels, the current combo is going to be something it wasn't before...look up change procedures for the lock, make sure you know what the new combo is in case you need it (probably not, but I'm not an expert), and set the new one by the change mark on the front of the dial; there should be two marks, one to dial the combo and one to set the new one about 10 or 15 degrees off the main one. If you don't know what the current combo is, you should be able to tell by looking at the inside of the lock while dialing. Knowing the exact dialing procedure will help, so look up instructions from the manufacturer.

yea, derp - I didn't even think of going to S&G's website until mh mentioned it. I've got the info now, thanks everyone.

I started a wooden stand today and the liquid nails are curing right now. Got some clear plastic material to cut and use for the cutaway window. So far so good. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Fitting instructions can be downloaded for the S&G website, but you need a spline key that you don't seem to have ....

Try posting this in the Buy Sell Trade subforum.. not the "got questions" sub forum. We try to keep all the sales in one place for easy tracking.

Thanks :)
