Making keys by feel!?!

Postby dirtrider1092 » 4 May 2011 18:59

Hi I'm wondering how an experienced locksmith can cut a key solely by feel? I know they use files but how and they tell how high/low to cut since i know they dont need to remove the lock itself! Ive been trying to find this out and all i can find is by removing the pins and measuring the height! My friend paid a guy $100 dollars to have a motorcycle key cut when he lost his and the locksmith came out and somehow "cut the key by feel" he didnt use numbers or key tags he only used "FEEL!"! i wish i had been there cause it seems impossible to me! Im looking forward to hearing from some of the more experienced members...thanks

Look up key impressioning. Im not sure 'by feel' is the best description for what you saw being done.

It is not making a key by feeling it. A locksmith can make a key by the marks left on the key by the lock. There are several book on key impressoning.
