How to hold your picks?

Postby tadpole_93 » 21 Jun 2011 3:09

Hi Guys,

I'm sure this question has been asked many times before but I couldn't find it,
I'm new to lock picking(as you can probably tell) and I have been struggling to work out how to hold a pick properly.
Is there any right or wrong way? Is it just personal preference?
None of the books i have read give very much info at all about holding the picks.

Thanks in advance for the help,
I hope this is the right place to post this,

Thanks,

Hold it in the way most comfortable for you. There are many different preferences, but no one "right" way to do it.

I hold them like a pencil, or on occasion like you'd grip a fork.

Pretty much like a pen, it's all up to personal preference though.

The question has already been answered, but I just ran across this pic by UWSDWF who used to be a regular here. It made me chuckle so I thought I'd share it.

Thank you to everyone who replied I really appreciate all of your help,
So there is no "Wrong" or "Right" way to hold a pick.

mainly, yea there is.. I see a lot of new pickers at lock picking villages and locksport meetings who seem afraid of the pick and hold it by the very end between their thumb and pointing finger. You're really supposed to hold it pinched like that but where the handle ends and the 'blade' starts. some people also hold it on the thin sides, you're suppose to pinch the wide part of the handle. I wish I had some photos.. hopefully my explanation made sense.

have fun and keep practicing,
