safe identification

Postby custhasno » 25 Aug 2011 16:22

Hi, I've recently moved in to a new apartment and it has a small safe. I'd like to know before using it, just how secure it is, but I can not find any info as I dont know the first thing about safe locks.

I have attached a pic, it s basic model key safe from a local DIY store, but could someone tell me:
a) the name of this type of lock (key looks like a buttefly)
b) can the Key be cut by taking it to any regular key cutter

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i have ot got the first clue, ive had to come to a lock picking site as its the only forum ive found where people might know.

From the photo, that looks like a double-bitted lever lock. Those locks come in a variety of quality: they range from moderately hard to pick, to extremely hard to pick (depending on the lock manufacturer). This likely isn't a high-end lock, though, based on the safe that it's installed into.

Where do you live? (It's hard to answer that question without knowing at least what country you're in.)

If you bolt it down, that safe is probably fine to stop a casual thief from walking off with your passport. If you're storing anything very valuable, there are probably better options. (And I should note that we generally don't discuss picking/opening safes in the general forums -- so we may not be able to give you much more advice than that.)

Looks like a european safe lock with a double throw lock in other words you have to turn the key twice to lock or open. its probably italian by technomax but the bow of the key isnt the right shape although they could have made it for someone else. An insurance company may give you about 4 k cash cover but you need to confirm this first in advance of buying it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I live in the UK. Just wanted to be sure it want a mickey mouse lock that google and any guy off the street could crack. Thanks for info on that.

If the key can simply be cut with no hassle i'll keep it off my key chain and secured somehwere.
