Ooops. Sorry. Looks like I mislead everyone here.
I don't want to change the combination at all. I do it with the change key of course.
The only reason I want to change the order of the wheel pack is:
I practiced many times manipulation and found only in very rare occasions a sharp dip on my first pass. Almost invariably the first number I obtain from the combination is for the wheel number 3 (ie: the one furthest away from the dial). As you know, it is a rather huge pain in the bottom to get that wheel first since it multiplies the time to get the other numbers by a factor of 10 (well, feels that way anyway).
The other downside is that it is quite hard to obtain an accurate number on wheel 3 since it involves a lot of trial and error to find the exact number in one of those gradual drops and rises in readings.
Anyway, I only managed to get the numbers right twice I think (maybe three times). One was out of sheer determination and one was when I got a sharp dip on the first pass (in that instance it took me less than 2 hours to get the combination). I have tried about 20 times in total (at several hours a time, sometimes 5 or 6 hours...).
All that being said, all I want to do is put that back wheel into the front of the pack and see if these problems persist. If they do, then I have a problem, if they don't then I would have been right.
I will try and obtain a crap lock to see the difference between a group 2 lock and an unrated lock. I have seen graphs with dips of 1 to 2 readings!!! What I call a 'sharp and obvious' dip is about half a reading.
It is an S&G 6741, the same one I mention in another thread.
Cheers,
L.
