I think you're correct except in the case where a lock (like a padlock with a heavy spring) might require a bit more force. Those situations are pretty rare in my limited experience, but it's still nice to have both. To be honest, if you're just starting out all you really need is a couple of hooks of each type. toool sells a beginner's set that mixes standard width and slimline width picks in one inexpensive set, or you could get one of the smaller 5- or 8-piece sets from southord in either size and purchase a few separate picks of the other size to add to it. Hopefully it's okay to mention those companies by name.
There may be other good reasons to use both sizes, but I've only been doing this a short while, myself.
