Destroyed(?) my master 220/parts all over

Postby atticRR » 29 Jun 2012 22:55

Hello there. I was picking on my master220 this morning before work, well, i was trying to. I had the cylinder removed from the lock body to make it easier. The first thing I did was push the shackle to the closed position. Terrible idea. All the guts came out the spot where the cylinder was- of course this was before i got to see where all this stuff lived. Then when i looked at the bottom the shackle clattered to the ground. Whatever, i wanted to get some picking in before work so i collected ball bearings, springs and other useless chunks of metal and put em into a ziplock for later, much later.

Lock mechanisim in hand i tried to pick it a couple times then put the key in to watch it work. Not thinking I pulled the plug out a bit too far launching the driver and the spring out. Stupid. I found both but then thought i lost the keypin as well. After mucking around on the floor with a flashlight i pulled the plug out a bit to look at what was happening this is when I managed to lose the keypin from the front. Now i have a lock with no driver in the rear and no keypin in the front. Lame.

Finally my question. The key obviously no longer works, i cant pick it open (just got the lock never managed to open it before I jacked it up) and I want to know will i somehow have to get the driver from the front all the way up into the bible before i can turn the plug and repin it properly? Maybe im over thinking all this and the answer is painfully obvoius but I'mm stumped. :oops:

@atticRR:

It sounds like you should try shimming the cylinder to repair it...

If you are unable to pick the driver pin you should be able to bend a small piece of strong piano wire to lift it so you can get the shim into position...

As far as the rookie mistake of taking the lock apart and closing the shackle, just about everyone has done that once unless they had access to and read the service manual for the lock in question and therefore had prior knowledge NOT to close the shackle while the cylinder was removed...

fixed!

Thanks for the info Evan. I was able to shim the front and the back pins. I tried to use one shim and go back to front but thats really tricky to do with no vice. I ended up milling a divot out of the top of the plug ( the part that overhangs and keeps it from sliding inward) so i could fit a shim from the front.

I was very disappointed to find absolutly no security pins in this lock. The only reason I purchased it was to get some security pin-on-pin action. Poor me.

Again, thanks for your input, its much appreciated.
