Ok so after a few weeks im back to the lock i originally started with. Its the one thT got away so to speak. I was kindly informed on here that brinks locks commonly have security pins so i practiced picking them on my practice lock. I go back to the brinks and get a bit further - i believe the pin furthest from the keyhole (last pin) is the only security pin. Ok great but i still cant open it lol. Any recommendations? I will try to post a picture. I have been quite successful with all other (about 7) random locks. Also this lock is new btw.
Is there something i could be missing? There are absolutely no numbers on this padlock. Just the brinks logo.
Thanks much

Without seeing the lock, here's my advice: Light tension, light touch with the pick. Light tension, light touch with the pick. Light tension, light....
You get the idea. I started to "get" just what both of those things really were when I picked a Brinks Marine padlock, after going through eight Masterlocks without much problem. I had gotten used to the pins setting with a THUNK and the pins in the Brinks didn't do that. I was shocked at how easy it was to overlift the pins and how little pressure was "too much" on the tension wrench.
Keep at it, it will click for you once you manage to pick it (no pun intended).
Side note: not sure which Brinks you have, but I had to get a slimline hook in order to deal with the keyway in mine.

I have 8 brinks locks and 5 have security pins and 3 do not. 3 of the 5 that have the security pins have 2 each, 2 of the 3 locks have the security pins in pin 2 and pin 4, and the last lock has security pins in pin 3 and pin 5. But I also have 2 Brinks Max Security lock (661-50001) 1 has security pins in it and 1 does not, so it does seem random. If it is a Brinks marine lock, (nickel plated) I have 2 of those and they both have 4 spools. if your lock is brass my guess is that you have one more security pin that you might be false setting, and if it is nickel plated then you probably have 4 spool pins. good luck and enjoy

Thank you, I will try this asap. And YESS I feel I will absolutely need a slimline hook. I dreaded this but I fear its true. The space is just too tight:( Thanks much!

It is nickel plated - and I found a video of someone picking a very similiar (if not exact) and his had 4/5 spool drivers. I think my problem may have been that instead of it only having 1/5 spool drivers it actually has 4/5. Thanks much,

The nickel plated one that I was talking about is the 101-40801 which looks like this, viewtopic.php?f=9&t=55383&p=401910#p401910That lock, judging by its size looks like the Brinks high security lock I think the number for it is 151-30001. My 151-30001 doesn’t have any security pins in it, (which by how random they seem to be it means nothing). It does feel like either the pins are a little undersized or the plug is ( there is a lot of feel play turning the plug. I have to pick the lock using bottom of keyway tension, for some reason I have a really hard time trying to top of keyway tension it. If it is a 151-30001 like mine, you don’t need a slim line pick to open it. Hope this helps.

that looks similar to a brinks ive been fighting with forEVER! I had to cut this lock off because i couldnt pick it off a toolbox that got donated at work, it drives me crazy. I have at least 10 hrs of picking in this monster. Ill be taking all the advice given here to try to crack it. Ive actually thought about sending it to one of the lock masters on this site-just so i can see it open! t was hard to judge the size on yours but mine is fairly small, note that mine also has a mark on it to easily see the rotation. Anyway, ill be looking forward to seeing yours opened up, hope it doesnt take as long as mine has! If all else fails maybe we can trade! also note the slim hook i made, it reaches in this lock with ease... Why is this thread so W I D E ?

Brinks by J E, on Flickr The small one is a 161-30001 and only has 4 pins. The large one, I forgot the model number, but it has 5 pins. The keyway looks taller on both of mine though... The small one, a small hook I have works good on. The large one rakes open easily, but is hard to SPP (for me, anyway).

YES I'd bet money thats the exact one I have. It is small-ish. Well on one hand I'm happy to hear its a beast, but on the other hand its frustrating as hell lol. I probably have ~4 hours in on this lock. In all reality I probably will try to get a slimline pick set before I give it another go... And yeah if you ever wanna trade I would do that. I actually have two of them - I bought them in a bonus set from Wal-Mart. Similiar problems with my Guard Security padlock from friggin' dollar general store lol. Thanks much everybody for the insight.

the lock is small, the key is small compared to a deadbolt key, and you need thin small picks to open it. the photo shows a handmade hook in a kind of craftknife handle. I suggest that the hook show is more than medium and a bit large. make some hook with half that height and good sanding and see what happens to you ability to pick.

what mort duke said and I see that in the photo of a lock on the plastic case, with the sharpie marker across the plug and cylinder to show movement, this photo also show whatmay be a short hook well sanded, and that pick could also be a handcrafted one since I am not familiar with a commercial set that has that handle partially shown.

@raimundo: smaller? well, i'll give it a go. Just recently i have seen hooks that were much smaller than mine-hook height smaller. i'll let everyone know how it works out.
