Finding Code for ComboSaver® Combination Ultra Laptop Lock?

Postby Sebastian33 » 30 Aug 2012 15:23

Hello,

it looks like i cant remember my code anymore. I have read and tried many things but mostly it were other products or i maybe i didnt get it.

Its this product here: http://www.kensington.com/kensington/en ... -lock.aspx

I tried to click the button and move the wheels, and it looks like at some point its harder but i simply cant find out the code this way. Then there was a manual here that stats one should put in a piece of a metal can into it to find out the code. But i only get that the thing moves through when its too thin or it doesnt move through at any number when its too broad. So i dont know if its the correct way.

Its so that this lock has the button at the top. When pressing it it goes in 2mm and when losing it it goes back. I guess when putting it into the notebook you should move it 180° and then press the button with the correct code set. Then change the code while pressing and the button doesnt come out back. Is that right?
When the code is set correctly can the button be pressed deeper?
Assuming that was the functionality i tried to test it out by pressing the button and move the first wheel one round from zero to zero. Then move the next wheel for one number. Then moving on after all numbers are tested. I hoped that this way the correct number would be found and the lock is closing. Then i only would need to check the last 10 combinations. But it didnt work. Seems to be protected against.

Can someone help me?

Thanks!
Sebastian

But i already posted the product page at kensington. Its the same lock that i own. And the lock isnt attached to my notebook at the moment. I only want to use it again. Or at least i want to use it in the near future.

What images do you need more?

Thanks!

School just started everywhere and you're asking about a lock that most schools and colleges use to secure laptops and projects, so forgive me for being blunt, but we sometimes have folks stop by here who's first and only question is "how do I get into x brand of lock" and if it wasn't first week of school around half the planet, I wouldn't normally be so suspicious, so I'm asking you for a photo of your actual lock. How do I know you from any one else on the planet who may be up to no good, I don't. If you were an existing member who's already asked about other stuff and had been around for a while, this wouldn't be an issue. Please try to see if from our point of view before you get too defensive or offended.

Your best bet is to just start dialing 0000 to 9999, run through 1900-2012 first, people like putting years they were born etc.

Ah ok, that makes sense... I now made a photo of my lock with the thread here in background: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6p82md&s=6

I doubt i would have used a year because many people use it and its less secure that way.

But even when i would test it out... how can i know that at this moment i have the correct number? I already tested a good amount of codes and clicked the button after i set a number. Because i thought that the button will go in more than the 2 normal millimeter. But now i think its not possible to find it that way. I maybe have to press the button first, then move the number and release the button. And only when the button doesnt come out again it was the correct number. But this testing would be a pain for the fingers even more because its even harder to move the numbers this way.
At least... when im forced to test it out... i need to know exactly whats different with the lock when the correct number is put in. Maybe the button can be pushed more than 2mm. Or something like this. But i really would prefer to know a trick to not pain my fingers and spend so much time.

I see this lock is only good for the random guy that takes a look on my notebook. I guess it can be broken fast with metal shears or when this one knows a trick. But i think few will know such trick or will search one first or have a tool for it. I think its only to make it a bit harder for thieves. On top of it one should use some internal card that allows to find the position of the notebook i think. But my notebook isnt expensive enough to think about such thing.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you didn't do this:
"Online Register & Retrieve™ combination code service proetcts against forgotten combination codes"
(From the product link in your first post.)
8)

There is a link to a PDF of the manual on that same page - click the "Resources" tab. It should have everything you need as far as how to open the lock once the correct combination has been entered.

No, unfortunately i didnt register. I checked out the pdfs but they are no help. The manual is for another lock even.

This thing wasnt cheap. Good that it isnt too easy to hack but otherwise... when i cant use it...

I wonder if it similar to bike locks of that style...?

Sometimes, if you pull on it and rotate the last wheel, you can feel it click into place when it gets to the right number. Repeat for the other wheels.

Since it has a 'button', it might operate differently though... On the locks I'm talking about, you simply dial in the right number then pull it apart.

I haven't examined one of these up close, so I'm not very familiar with how they work... I've seen plenty of them (they are the model typically used to secure display items to the shelf at electronics stores), but haven't really 'played' with one...

Hi Sebastian, and welcome to the forum.

If I was you I'd go to a store and check how another lock like your works.
Then I'd try every possible combination, maybe while watching TV. You can go trough a thousand of numbers a day without even getting tired.

I'm not sure if there's a trick for this lock... if so, you may receive some info via PM in the next days.

Good luck :)
