Couldn't this lock had been opened by bumping it? (i.e. creating a bump key from the appropriate blank)

Would've been faster than impressioning it... I think ...

That wouldn't have gotten the core out for rekeying. I would probably have drilled a hole to put pressure on the pin and picked the lock myself.

The whole point was to be able to get the core out to re-key it. I had never come across this lock before so I did pick it several times trying to figure it out before I posted my questions. I needed a working control key to get the plug out so impressioned a working key and modified a key blank to make the control key. I have since re-keyed 4 other doors that have the same bitting, so I was able to use my new control key to remove the plugs. It was at work, so I was very hesitant to do any alterations to the shell for fear of damaging the lock.

I think I'm missing something here... If the bump key was cut on the control key then why couldn't that had been used to withdraw the core?

It is quite probable that bumping with a control key could have worked, but having seen the 7th pin, I think it might have damaged or broken it making it impossible to ever pull the core again. The last pin (control pin) is much smaller in diamiter than the normal pins, so striking it repeatedly has the possibilty of damaging it. I went the safe route.

Besides, I've gotten a bit better at impressioning, so it only took me about 15-20 min to get a working key. I still saved the company a buncha money not having to have a locksmith out.

(Side note: I would happily support and recommend a local locksith for things like this instead of doing them myself, but my company uses one of the big corporate companies that gobbled up all the mom-and-pop places. Id rather get the learning experience and look good for the boss instead of calling the big company)
