Beginner Advice and Introduction

Postby grim789 » 2 Jan 2013 18:58

So i purchased a new lock pick set the other day and i have been really into it i gotta say for the deal i got it was a steal 15 piece set for only 15 dollars can't beat that. I was instantly hooked i picked my first lock which was a tiny padlock it was stupid easy then i picked my front door lock and dead bolt under 30 seconds. I realize that mostly all of this was pure luck just fumbling around within the lock pushing up the pins. I picked another padlock i had laying around really fast as well so i wanted more of a challenge i went out and bought me a brinks commercial security padlock pretty heavy duty 5 pins says it's unpickable i seriously doubt that i just haven't acquired the skill to do so. I am looking for some help with actually understanding i am thinking of purchasing a couple of books one which i am sure most experienced here are familiar with Practical Lock Picking : A Physical Penetration Tester's Training Guide by Deviant Ollam found it pretty cheap 30 bucks free shipping so can't pass that kind of deal up.

Im really glad that i found this forum after looking around and seeing that the people here are experienced and enjoy the art of lock picking. I recently only took an interest in the art after watching the show Elementary based on a modern day sherlock holmes i found myself intrigued by the skill. I really want to learn the skill rather than just poking around and getting lucky after spending hours on the brinks lock i mentioned with no success i found myself rather frustrated that i just could not get it open. I have been trying to listen and feel each pin and try to see if i can hear it setting or just feel the loose springiness. I was hoping that some could help with what style lock it is and the pick that would be best for me to use.

Sorry if this was in the wrong place and if it was a ramble i had to retype it twice.

Deviant Ollam's stuff is very good, Solomon (a forum member here) has a very good self published pdf that he has posted for free, he'll probably chime in to point you in the right direction, "ted the tool MIT guide to lock picking" is easily found with a google search, and explains the basics pretty well. Its good to get a lot of information collected, but practice is obviously more valuable in the end.

The brinks lock you have most likely has security pins. there are some threads here that go into how to deal with them in serious detail, as do most of the texts you can buy / find. Welcome to the community.

Thanks i will have to check out his pdf if i can find it if not hopefully he will check out the post and link me to it. Thanks for the reference hopefully i can find a free pdf doesn't seem to be hard to find just about any book free online these days. Yeah im looking to really learn a good amount about locks i find the art of it very interesting and a challenging task that's good while im just sitting around.

Ah that is probably why i have been having so much trouble i have been trying and trying at least 2 3 hours a day working to get it open i often just get frustrated and have to walkaway. Maybe this was a bad starter one but i did want a challenge i will look into those for some advice and hopefully i will achieve my goal of getting it unlocked. I appreciate the welcome.
