Locked BEST SFIC in the basement, nobody has the key.

Postby StickyWicket » 7 Oct 2004 1:53

Nobody's been inside for years, and nobody knows what's in there. I need to know what I need to do to open this sucker. I've got the diagram for how to make the tension wrench, but I've got the feeling I'm gonna need some other kind of tool as well. As I said, it's an SFIC lock, and I'm fairly sure it's a 6-pin (6-tumbler? 6-pin? Not sure, I'm pretty new at this), as every other SFIC lock in the dorm (which is every lock in the building) has keys with 6 notches. I plan to destory the tool after I'm done, as it would compromise nearly every lock in every residence hall on campus. Any help at all would be appreciated.

I should also note the lock is likely 10+ years old, possibly 20+.

If you've never picked a lock before, a BEST IC is not exactly a good starter lock. You will need a tension wrench and a pick (half diamond or hook). Even then, you're going to be fighting to figure out what shearline you're setting the pins at as well as fighting with the "stickiness" of the lock.

You said it was in a dorm? Why don't you have the campus locksmith come out and open it? He can drill it if nothing else, and you're in the free and clear. Just my advice - the time tested mantra of the hobbiest picker - "If it ain't yours, don't stick your pick in it!"
