Bought a Used Blitz- Send to HPC?

Postby Lock-Star » 14 Feb 2013 17:45

This is my first post so forgive me if I do something wrong! :)
Got a good deal on a used HPC Blitz, my first. It cuts keys that operate locks very smoothly, no gripes there. The motor is really loud and sounds like its rattling a little, though. Called HPC and they said they could take a look. I just have to "mummify" it and mail it to them and they'll clean it up and inspect it for me and fax me a quote before doing any work on it. Should I do this? I'd kinda like to have it brought up to factory specs even though I'm not 'smithing full time just yet. Is it worth it? Anyone have experience with this?
Thanks!

You can trust that HPC would do a good job if you sent it, but if all you need is a motor, I would try to source one locally first.

I would find a local electronic motor company and see what they say. They can rebuild it for you if needed.

The arm that holds the key and controls the depth doesn't always fall back on its own so well, either, though. And I'm wondering- is it supposed to have a base plate that covers all the innards? Mine doesn't and since I've never looked underneath one I don't know if something is supposed to be there. Having a local place look at the motor may be a good idea.
I know when you register a new machine with them they give you the option of giving you some free software or a calibration kit or something-- wonder if I'd get freebies for a used machine :)

It's just a Dayton brand electric motor. You can buy them at any industrial supply company like Grainger or McMaster Carr. A local motor shop might be able to fix it cheaper also.

No cover plate on the bottom.

Post a pic of what you think is not moving properly. If it's what I think it is, you can just loosen it up by cleaning and a little lube.

I've NEVER seen a reason to send a machine back to HPC unless it was a warranty problem.

They won't give you squat for having a used machine.

Congrats on getting one. Heck of a work horse that should outlast you.

I recently purchased a new blitz. The depth plunger was sticking some. I believe it was because (1) it's new and needs use. and (2) needs some lubrication. I put a drop of synthetic oil on it and pushed it in and out about 40 times. It no longer sticks. (If you lube it, after pushing the plunger some, wipe off the excess. oil will attract dust and shavings.)

This is all very helpful! I appreciate this forum. As a new locksmith i have so many questions and just going through this site has been very helpful and educational - and i've only just scratched the surface.

However, I sent the machine off yesterday as i am just not confident enough in my ability to take a motor apart and start digging around. Afraid I might tear something up.

This is great information for future use. Thank you all. I'll update this again when it comes back.
