Great site. I'm a newbie who became interested after I was the victim of a criminal lock picker. I'm trying to find out what the best lock is for home use on the old front door. I'd like a lock that is easy to install into an exisitng door but provides the maximum anti-picking protection.

Filling out your location in your profile information, as well as including the type(s) of locks you currently have on your door(s) would allow us to better give you the information you request.

There are plenty of good locks... but... don't focus solely on the lock itself for crime prevention. Good security involves making your house look occupied when you aren't home, effective lighting, picking up your mail/newpapers, etc.

You need a good deadbolt to prevent your door from being easily jimmied. If your door has glass in or near it... consider a double cylinder lock.

ANSI Grade 1 (commercial grade) locks typically aren't used in residential settings... but they are available. If you are bent on 'more than your average' security lock... consider having a locksmith (authorized dealer) come out and install this for you. It is better than most anything you'll typically find at the Home Depot.
