Dutch bycicle locks

Postby lajos » 7 Oct 2004 3:52

I lost the key to my bike's wheel lock and had to pick it open to use it.
I also used a not very good cable lock on it.
So my bike was stolen.

Now I got two new locks, tested and colour coded. One blue and one red from different manufacturers.

Anyone knows if these colour coded schemes are actually regulated at all?

Do they also apply to the type of lock or just the chain?

One of them seems to have a pretty low security regular pin lock, that's why I'm asking.

Anyone has more info/experiences on Dutch Bike locks picking? (ie: which ones are difficult to pick?)

Thanks,
L.

OK, here are some horrible pics of the locks. I don'e have a digital camera, so I have used my extremely cheap webcam to it's maximum effect... Bear with me.

First lock: Trelock.

As you can guess and probably not see, the lock seems to be of the disk type. So I assume it to be quite secure in terms of the traditional bike thieves.

The second lock only says 'Koning line hardened' on it.

This lock seems to have a better chain (?!?! unrelated to lockpicking) but the lock looks absolutely appaling.
Looks to be normal pins... Only tried to pick it once for a few minutes but didn't succeed. Will try again with smaller tools.

Any opinions (especially from the Dutch around who might know these locks better since they are so prevalent in this country)?

Thanks,
L.

i can tell you the square padlock is a disklock of some variety, and that padlock its in is quiet hard to get with bolt cutters, so i'd sya thats a higher quality to the bottom one which seems like they spent $1 making the lock

yep, that's what I thought.

I picked the second lock with a rake earlier today, although I couldn't do it again 10 minutes later  I think the tensions are wrong...

Anyway, I am absolutely appaled that those people sell those locks at the same price. Actually, the blue one is probably more expensive since the chain has a higher 'rating'.... pathetic.
