Am I just weird?

Postby fgarci03 » 27 Feb 2013 21:24

Hey!

I'm finding something to be very strange.
I have an Ultimate Chalenge practice lock. By having it since I started picking, and as I put it under so much stress, I find it almost impossible to pick it with just 5 regular pins.

That's great for one side, because I can practice on a beated up lock.
What's really weird is that I can pick it fairly easier if it has 3 spools and 2 regular drivers, than if they are all regular pins.
I know a lock with only spools can become quite easier that a regular one. But 3 spools in 5 pins is it normal?
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

Yes, you are weird. But so are the rest of us! Welcome to the crowd.

It may be that you are accustomed to the spools, and are subconsciously lifting the key pins above the shear line. Not sure, but that is my guess.

Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

Yes it can be. I was also thinking that with the spools, the feedback is a bit better so I feel more when they set (even when not in the exact binding order and later they'll reset again).

I also have a tendency to false set everything when I pick spools untill the plug partialy rotates and work my way from there, instead of trying to set everything right at first time with super light tension. Don't know if it's correct to do this. But I'm heavy handed so it's hard for me to keep a steady feather light tension for a long time. So I use regular tension, and then decrease it to allow the plug to rotate back to fully set the pin.

Don't know. Gotta keep practicing
