hard spots amongst the pins.

Postby JGC175 » 27 Feb 2013 13:11

I have been trying to pick what looks like a basic master lock number 3 I think. My girlfriend got it in Navy boot camp and it has a silver top and a blue rubber piece around the bottom that normally says master lock but rather says navy. Anyways I have picked it a few times by complete accident. This lock makes me question everything I know about lock picking. What troubles me the most is it is a 4 pin lock and the number 3 pin I think feels like running the pick over a rock. It doesn't move no matter how little tension is applied but there is a pin behind it so it has to be a pin right? What is it?

Does it move without any tension applied at all? Could be a spool pin. Do you have a working key for this lock?

I think so too. I thought a hard spot could be a binding pin but I can usually push those up. I pushed on this with very light tension very forcefully and it doesn't move. But I only notice it under tension

If it only gets stuck when you tension it, try to lift it up and then put some tension. Release and see if it was set. Fuss a bit untill you find the right amount of lifting needed..

It sometimes happens to me and I just hate it
I find it to happen on really cheap locks or in locks I've put a lot of stress in...
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

I have a couple locks like this.

The oversetting lethod can work, though youmay have to fuss with it a bit.

Also wave jigglers (i use the three wave southord pagoda) will often open these guys, sometimes really fast.

I own a good (perhaps excessive) number of Master no 3s and This seems to be a common occurrence in either the 3rd or 4th pins
If it works, it ain't wrong! -GWiens2001
