Manipulation proof

Postby jeff77 » 11 May 2013 16:21

2nd post... I'm learning

When it comes to S&G or Lagard type combination locks, what does manipulation proof actually mean?

Do any of these locks have any sort of re-locking (if drilled) capability built into the lock?

It obviously means they are harder to manipulate... More details on safe combo lock manipulation is however not available in the open section of this forum. Please check the forum rules for details on our "advanced" section.

Recent safe combo locks typically do have a relocker that blocks the mechanism if someone punched the dial into the safe.

But again, no discussion about opening safes without knowing the combination or having the correct key, please.

Thanks

I'm not trying to get in, I'm trying to prevent anyone else from getting in!

This is a low end safe, I was thinking of adding some hardplate between the lock and the inside front face of the door to slow down any drilling attempts. Upon further reading Lagard makes a vague reference to a relocking mechanisim (that sounds like it might be inside the lock) that gets triggered if the lock is drilled. So if that's the case, it would probably be easier to simply replace my 3330 style lock with one that has this relock capability. Or possible do both.

I read more about the anti manipulation aspect and it looks like these locks have small drop points on the wheels to trick any would be manipulators.

Safes are manipulated by listening to the sounds the lock makes. Manipulation proof locks make lots of extra noise. Some have weights or balls that rattle as the handle is turned, some have spring loaded paws that click as you turn the handle.

Balls that rattle around that's cool. This is an interesting field, it's quite entertaining to read about the innovative ideas that the safe builders come up with to make the bad guys work at their game and then the equally creative ideas that are used to defeat those measures.

Thanks for the explanation
