Flush door vs rebated door? What the difference?

Postby ARF-GEF » 24 May 2013 5:04

Ok so my question is this: What is the difference between a Flush door vs rebated door?
And how can I tell which one do I have? :)

I tried google but it only got more confusing...

Thanks for your help :)

@ARF-GEF:

A "flush door" is a standard door...

A "rebated door" or "rabbited door" is a pair of doors which physically overlap where the two doors meet so that one of the doors must open before the other can... The "active leaf" physically blocks and will hold closed the "inactive leaf"...

Like a pair of flush doors with an astragal (a thin piece of metal or wood molding applied to the surface of the active leaf which overlaps the inactive leaf) rebated doors must be equipped with a coordinator to make sure that the inactive leaf closes completely before the active leaf is allowed to close all the way...

Thank you very much for the help Evan! :)

But I'm not sure what is common at you in the US is also common here at the other side of the pond.
You said flushed door is the common.
But rebated is the overlapping one.
Here I have this door, which looks overlapping to me, but this is the common one here. So now I'm still confused :S
This is the common type here. I believe it's rebated. But I'm not sure? Maybe it's neither of those 2, but a 3rd type?

Anyway here is photo of my opened door's side: (It's pretty thick...)

And here is a photo of the passing door frame and the wall from the inside:

Sorry if the photos are big.
I'm not sure can id be clearly established what kind of door is this or shall I take another one?

Apart from establishing what kind of door it is, I'm starting to believe one cannot actually put a traditional deadbolt in it at all, due the the structure of the door.
It is covered by wood, but I believe there is both metal parts and layers of plastic inside. Also it closes at 3 point on 1 side instead of just 1.
What is a professional's take on that one?

Since you are in Europe I shall use the European or at least UK definitions.

A flush door as the name implies sits flush with the surface of the door frame. It rests against a stop in the frame and if you look at the latch side of the door it is straight across the thickness.

A rebated door is notched along the latch side and fits up against the door frame. The edge profile looks a bit like a L the bottom leg of the letter L sits up against the frame and the vertical L leg fits inside the frame cut out.

However in the UK we also use the same definition as Evan used. Typically instead of an astragal the doors are notched so that they overlap. See below.

Many thanks Cledry & Evan.
I think that cleared it up for me

So I believe mine is rebated. :)

thanks for the explaination Cledry. .. sometimes different countries use different terms.. in ours..we commonly say normal door for the flush door..and overlapping door for the rebated ones..regards.
