Is this an old locksmith tool?

Postby Stonebreaker » 9 Aug 2012 16:58

I'm trying to find out the purpose of this tool, a couple of people have suggested that it's for use by a locksmith for opening an old lock. Anyone recognize it?

Front part looks like a blank for a mortice lock, don't see how it could open one though. I can't see what the trigger mech is supposed to do from this angle so who knows what it's for.

reminds me of the frame work for an old grease gun like this:

but it also reminds me of something you'd see on a farm, such as some sort of nut cracker, or stirrer, something to take the pits out of peaches, I donno, that last one is just a silly guess, but it looks like the handles and such were stainless and made for food processing in a factory or farm. Also looks like you only have half of what ever it is, the top rail looks like it had a tank or hopper or some sort of attachment that would go on it, all those fancy cut outs arent just ornamental, that would have been to expensive to make back in 1920-1940 just for looks.

thanks for sharing, let us know if you find out what the heck it is!

Please post a picture of the tip so we can see what part is articulated. It might help identify it.

Someone took just one photo of this tool ten years ago, so I won't be able to post another photo, but I just heard back from someone who saw this tool when the photo was taken, if his memory is correct the rectangular part at the end was two pieces that spread open when the handle was pulled. So it probably isn't locksmith related after all.

looks like it might be some sort of medical device. either a clamp or keep something open. if you look at the hilt on top it looks like it can latch in 2 positions, assuming one position is the 2 halves open and the other the 2 halves closed. something that perhaps would be used as a surgeons tool in ww1 or 2 to open a bullet wound so one can remove foreign material.

If I adjust my screen size to 75 % I can see the end of the tool.
But I still don't know what exactly it is and I'm a hillbilly.
