Help with Master 642(?)'s stuck dial

Postby ARF-GEF » 24 Jun 2013 8:21

Hi

I have this Master padlock (maybe type 642? Not too sure, please correct me if I'm wrong) which I used from when I need a low security combination padlock.

The problem is the top dial is stuck. For no apparent reason (it did not fell down or anything) after normal usage I tried to close it but I realised the top dial won't move.
I can "lock" it with the other dials, but that not only reduces it to a 3 dial one, but also neglects the underlying problem.

I reset the combination, but now instead of just the up-most dial not moving at all, now it became really hard to move the second dial either. So now I got a reset padlock which has 1 dial stuck the second dying, but I still can reset it to further combinations without an issue.

It is not even old, 3-4 years or so. I believe they often come with life long guarantee but unfortunately I do not have a receipt.

Any ideas to help it or any explanations what can this be?

Here's a photo of the padlock:

Thank you very much for your help and ideas :)

Forgot to mention: WD40 and jerking the shackle, hitting it with rubber hammer did not help :)

chuck it out and buy a new one. they're only a few bucks, right. or better yet, buy a new one then cut it open to see if you can see what's wrong! or even mail it in to Master with a little explanation and maybe they'll send you a new one.

My guess is that you only thought it was reset and instead turned the shackle while on an incorrect combo number. Put it back in set position and turn the wheels with a small amount of pressure to find the correct number.

Raymond:
:D
I am a bit of a noob but not that much.
Since I can change the combination and lock and open ti all right with other dials I don't think I mistook reset and normal function.
But thanks anyway :)

Vinnie: good ideas I will be thinking about them :)

Relax ARF-GEF. No slight intended. I have done the very thing I suggested. Turned out the little tabs in the lock that move into the combo set grooves were worn and instead set in an incorrect position. The fact that you indicate that the shackle moves when the other wheels are put in the opening position tells me the part inside that allows the shackle to move is 'open.' The fact that the dial wheel will not move tells me that it is jammed. The only thing I can think of that would jam it is the other wheel on the inside. I stand by my previous suggestion and put the blame on the lock, not you. Considering somewhat sloppy innards, that lock may never be dependable any more if it can be made to work at all. The previous poster who suggested getting a new one is most likely right. But, we still want to discover the technical aspects of what, why, and how. Good luck and let us know what the final solution is.
