Saw a really weird Keymark the other day

Postby daniel22747 » 7 Feb 2013 7:46

Ok so the other day I was at a friend's pad and he went out back to smoke. On the way in I noticed that the door knob had a lock that said Keymark on it. I know what a keymark is and how they have those crazy key hole openings.

The odd thing was this keymark had what looked to be a normal key hole. Looked just like a run of the mill pin tumbler lock. It was however an interchangeable core type lock.

Anybody ever heard of such a thing? Is this a new model. If so it seems like a step down in security unless new security features have also been added.

Is it possible that it was a keymark but at sometime in the past the keyway needed to be replaced and it was replaced with something more standard to save cost?

What do you guys think?

This is just my 2 cents, but is it possible to be an imitation?

Don't know about where you live, but here it's pretty common to have imitations both with a slightly different name (KeyMark - Keymart for example) but also with the exact same name and even a look alike logo. I'm sure they're not exactly legal but it's some obscure stores who sell them so untill something big happens, no one is going to care unfortunantley..

But your insight on the replaced keyway is great! I would never think of it
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

That's another possibility I was thinking about. I'll have to take another look at the lock.

Medeco makes Keymark in both standard and SFIC. Also the newer Keymark x4 are a straight up and down keyway, and do not have the angled leg. They do however have a slider like the m3 so that may be what you saw.

Also, a picture would be helpful if you can get one!

Never seen a Keymark in NZ. To accommodate the angled leg, is the key milled out of a very thick coined but flat 'blank' or does the coining create the angled leg which is then tidied up at the milling stage?

Thicker blanks just like the Best "Premium" keyways -- noted as an additional feature "stronger" blanks are more durable...

US Patent 5176015:
pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?docid=05176015

envisages the lower leg can be at a 45 degree angle requiring a 0.15 inch thick blank. I saw a comment some time back (possibly on alt.locksmithing) that angles as extreme as 45 degrees have not been used in practice.
