Repining

As long as the diameters are the same, are most pins the same? What I mean is,say I had a Kwikset repining kit but I wanted to repin a Schlage lock. Can this be done as long as I could find the correct length pin? I know the different companies number their pins differently,so this would be a trial and error exercise until I found the correct length pin.

Yes, most lock companies within a category use the same diameter pins. Most deadbolts use the same pin diameters, but differing lengths.

Can't say always, because there are exceptions to every rule.

You may want to buy a generic pining kit rather than a Kwickset one if you intend to repin a Schlage. Some of the pin lengths are the same or close enough… others are quite a long way out. You could just use the next longest pin and file it down. You can see Depth information here…

the Depths and pins ARE different between Kwikset and Schlage. The the difference between each depth in a Kwikset is 0.023 while Schalge is a 0.015.

While there are some pins which may have a similar height across the 2, there are some which don't fit "nicely"..

if you find you are doing both, then get a universal pin kit that has 0.005 increments in each pin..

The main thing I am trying to get away from is having to buy all the individual pinning kits when I will probably only repin a few locks; say for friends family.

Get a .003 kit if that's the case. Specs won't be 100 percent the same but you will be 'close'
I have a bunch of individual kits as well as a Lab mini .003

Well since (I think) Kwikset and Schlage number their pins differently,I was just gonna insert the new key in the plug and drop pins in until I get the correct length....kind of redneck I know, but all I got is time. :) So they need to be the correct diameter I'm a thinking.
So what should it be,.003 or .005?

If you use a .005" kit, you should be 'close enough', but a .003" kit will always be able to get you within .001" of the proper length. A well made lock may have rougher operation with the .005 kit. If you have a choice, I'd suggest the .003" kit.

The depth and space for each brand of locks are different so naturally they will be labeled differently. That's why the pin kits have a fancy chart under the lid :)

Like Gordon said, I'd go with the .003 kit. I've been very happy with mine.

The diameter of the pins will be the .115 for all brands unless you're working on American/Master padlocks or SFIC.

Ok thanks guys.I can get a Lab mini on Amazon for $90. I was just wanting them for "normal" door locks and such. BTW,what diameter are the SFICs?

I must have been thinking pin channel diameter. Thanks for the correction.
